Commissioned by Melbourne Fringe Festival, Mini SPIN is an adaptation of SPIN for Deaf, CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) hard of hearing and hearing children and their families.
Inspired by club scenes and social dancing practices in San Francisco, Cuba and Berlin, Mini SPIN is an interactive and participatory dance rave performance event with three Deaf Hosts and a DJ. It celebrates connection, escapism and the ancient/modern powers of dance rituals.
Who says raves are for adults only?
Mini SPIN is an intimate and playful interrogation of who can belong and coexist in dance rave realms, challenging assumptions that Deaf people and children do not belong in these spaces. Mini SPIN celebrates the intersectionality of Deaf culture, disability, dance, and music. Everyone on the Deaf spectrum is welcome to take part.
Mini SPIN was first created and presented in Naarm (Melbourne), the traditional lands of the Kulin Nation and we pay our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples and all First Nations peoples whose sovereignty was never ceded.
Mini SPIN acknowledges the original collaborators of SPIN and Mini SPIN in Melbourne and sincerely thanks them for their creative input and energy for this work.
Mini SPIN has been supported and funded by Darebin Arts Speakeasy, Auslan Services, Pozible supporters, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Northcote Town Hall and Sydney Festival.
